How to Stop Doomscrolling on Android

Doomscrolling often begins as a quick check and continues without a clear decision to keep going. A useful response is to change the conditions around that habit, not simply demand more willpower from yourself.

Notice what doomscrolling looks like for you

The word can describe several patterns: repeatedly refreshing news, moving between short videos, following one alarming post into another, or opening the same feed whenever there is an idle moment. The content varies, but the common feature is automatic continuation. You intended to check one thing; twenty minutes later, you are still scrolling.

Start by observing the pattern for a few days. Which app do you open? What time does it happen? Did a notification prompt you, or did you unlock your phone without a specific purpose? You do not need a detailed diary. Identifying one recurring trigger gives you something concrete to change.

Reduce automatic triggers

Notifications turn someone else’s timing into your prompt to look at the phone. Keep alerts that need a timely response, such as direct messages from important people, and disable promotional, recommendation, trending-topic, and “you missed this” alerts. Android lets you adjust notification categories for many apps, so you may not need to silence an app completely.

Physical cues matter too. Keeping the phone face down, outside arm’s reach, or away from the table during a task adds a small pause before checking. At night, charging it outside the bedroom or farther from the bed can separate waking up from immediately opening a feed.

Make distracting apps less immediate

Move the apps you open automatically off the first home screen. Remove their widgets and shortcuts. Placing them in a folder is not a magical solution, but the extra search step creates a moment in which you can notice what you are about to do. If your launcher supports hiding apps from the main view, that can reduce visual prompts further.

You can also use the browser version of a service instead of its app. Signing in and navigating through a browser is less seamless, which can be helpful when seamless access is the problem.

Use Android Digital Wellbeing deliberately

On supported Android devices, Digital Wellbeing shows screen-time information and provides tools such as app timers, Focus mode, and Bedtime mode. The exact options and names can vary by device maker and Android version. Begin with the dashboard: compare your impression of the day with the recorded time, then choose one app or time period to address.

An app timer can interrupt an open-ended session by setting a boundary in advance. Focus mode can pause selected apps during work, study, or another planned period. Bedtime settings can reduce stimulation late in the day. These controls work best when the rule is specific—for example, “pause social feeds during the first hour of work”—rather than a vague intention to use the phone less.

Add friction instead of relying only on willpower

Friction means putting a noticeable step between an impulse and the usual response. It can be as simple as removing a shortcut, turning the display grayscale, requiring a timer before opening a feed, or seeing a reminder as daily use rises. The goal is not to make the phone unusable. It is to make automatic behavior visible soon enough for you to choose whether to continue.

Hard blocking and softer friction

Hard blockers are useful when you want a firm boundary and are comfortable losing access for a period. Softer friction keeps access available but makes continued use less effortless. Neither approach is universally better. A blocker may suit a focused work session; softer friction may suit messaging, maps, work accounts, or other apps that you cannot completely lock away.
